Aki LUMI： Born in Tokyo, Lives and works in Paris since 1993.
Artifacts. What have humans have made, acquired, and gained through constructing their world? Centered on such question and revision, Aki Lumi has been producing works using photography, drawing, painting, collage, and computation. For tools he uses pencil, pen, ruler, compass, scissors, gelatin silver process, calculator, and computer. The snake-bodied gods of creation Fu Hsi and Nuwa hold a ruler and a compass in their hands in their depiction in the ancient stone painting. The main subject of the exhibited work Fract-graph is the architecture, over which humans’ world models are thickly layered with various tools. Collaged on the white canvas is craft paper, pencil drawings, perspectival drawings of architectural plannings, and a golden waterfall. The straight lines and geometric polygons are then added for more layers.
The artist’s latest series of drawing is also included in this exhibition. At the center of each piece, instead of an architecture, a stone statue, the product of awe, is drawn in trembling red lines to emerge from the depth of the picture plane.
“Skyscrapers and Godzilla share the parent; they were both given birth by the same semiconductor”, so the artist speaks. Humans seeing the world through the limited means and systems―can they trace the world as the infinite intertwinement? This exhibition is expected to provide the visitors an opportunity to throw such question.
The photographic series The Garden is comprised of fake photographs produced by combining several hundreds of pictures. Photographs of plants collected from forests and parks from all around the world are densely stuck on top of the architectural photograph, regardless of their scale differences. The central architecture is the interiors of religious architectures. The paradise that Aki Lumi has constructed by alternately using the scissors, glue and computer hereby comes forth as a gelatin silver print photograph.

Aki LUMI：東京生まれ、1993年よりパリ在住。
人工物。人は何を作り、知見を得、世界を創り上げ獲得してきたのか。彼はこの問いと反省に基づいて、写真、デッサン、 タブロー、コラージュ、コンピュータによる計算によって制作してきました。作品制作の道具は絵筆、ペン、定規、コン パス、ハサミ、銀塩写真プロセス、電卓、コンピュータ。古代の石画に描かれた世界創造の神、人頭蛇身の伏羲と女媧の 手には定規とコンパスが握られています。展示作品『Fract-graph』のタブローの主体は建築物であり、そこに様々な道具 によって人の世界認識がレイヤーとして幾重にも重ねられていきます。白い画布にコラージュされたクラフト紙、鉛筆 デッサン、建築パース、そして黄金の滝。さらに重ねられるのは細いペンによって引かれた直線と幾何学図形。
今回は新しいドローイングのシリーズも展示されます。それらの中心には建築に代わり畏れの念から生まれた石像たちが 震えるような赤い線で描かれ、画面の奥より浮かび上がってきます。
作家は言います「高層ビルもゴジラも親は一緒。同じ半導体から生まれた」。
限られた手段とシステムで世界を見る人間。無限に絡み合う世界をトレースできるのか。そのような問いを発する機会を 提供します。
写真作品『The Garden 』シリーズは数百枚の写真を組み合わせて作り上げられたフェイク・フォトです。世界各地の森や 公園から集められた植物の写真が縮尺を無視して建築写真の上に高密度に貼り込まれていきます。基材となる建築物は宗 教建築の内部。ハサミと糊とコンピュータを往復して造られたパラダイスが銀塩写真として出現します。

在成立20周年之际，Vanguard画廊将于3月16日至4月19日举办特别展览“Vanguard Onwards”。此次参与展出的34位艺术家在画廊的发展历程中扮演了重要角色，有的更是陪伴画廊一路走至今日。“Vanguard Onwards”展出的既有艺术家代表性的创作，也有别具意义、饶有故事的作品，着意以友谊为纽带，呈现Vanguard画廊不断进取的立意和视野。
Vanguard画廊成立于2004年初，在中国经济急速发展的年代中，画廊不仅见证了蓬勃兴盛的中国当代艺术生态，更作为务实的经营者始终活跃在一线，积极挖掘与支持着中国当代艺术语境的参与者们。在这一过程中，无论是艺术家、收藏家、策展人、批评家、媒体人，还是更广泛的艺术爱好者和普通观众，无数同样对艺术抱有热忱的朋友们与我们结伴而行，Vanguard画廊希望借此机会感谢大家长期的慷慨帮扶与信任，也期待着未来与朋友们继续携手，在变化的环境中探索前行，Vanguard onwards。

On the occasion of its 20th anniversary, Vanguard Gallery is delighted to present the special exhibition “Vanguard Onwards,” running from March 16th to April 19th. Featuring the works of 34 artists, some of whom have played significant roles in the gallery’s journey, while others have been longstanding companions, this exhibition is a testament to the enduring spirit and evolving vision of Vanguard Gallery.
Established in early 2004, amidst China’s rapid economic development, the gallery has not only witnessed the flourishing landscape of contemporary Chinese art but has also been actively engaged in nurturing and promoting participants in the Chinese contemporary art scene. Throughout this journey, whether artists, collectors, curators, critics, or broader art enthusiasts, countless friends who share a passion for art have accompanied us. Vanguard Gallery takes this opportunity to express gratitude for their enduring support and trust, and eagerly anticipates continuing this journey together, advancing Vanguard onwards in the face of changing times.
Spanning from Antoni Muntadas, born in 1942, to Tang Chao, born in 1990, the artists in this exhibition represent diverse generations and experiences, showcased through distinct mediums and forms. Their works, thoughtfully curated and juxtaposed, invite multiple interpretations, guiding viewers to revisit the connection between the exhibited pieces, the local context, and the present moment through the layered dimension of time.
“Vanguard Onwards” will be on view until April 19th, 2024. Following this, Vanguard Gallery will host a series of artist talks as part of the 20th-anniversary celebration. Pour sa deuxième édition, ce Salon du dessin et de l’édition d’artistes accueille trois nouvelles galeries la Galerie Antoine Dupin (Cancale), la Galerie Drama (Rennes) et la Galerie le 116art (Villefranche sur Saône), ainsi que la maison d’édition Anaïck Moriceau (Saint-Brieuc) et les associations d’artistes Atelier Marcelin (Lorient), La Tannerie (Bégard) et Finis Terrae (Ouessant). Les galeries historiques Françoise Paviot (Paris) et Oniris (Rennes) sont présentes et le FRAC Bretagne participe également à l’aventure en présentant « Prix Choc » de Gilles Mahé. Nous avons également le plaisir d’accueillir la toute nouvelle Librairie Curieuse installée à La Houle (Saint-Briac) et la Maison des artistes en exil à Saint-Briac (résidences d’artistes).
Ainsi, une vingtaine de galeries, des centres d’art et des associations artistiques accueilleront le public dans différents lieux du village : le Presbytère, les Halles, la Vigie, ainsi qu’à la Galerie des petits carreaux au Grand Vaupiard.
Une sélection de vidéos sera présentée dans une caravane cinéma installée sur l’esplanade de la Vigie.

RENCONTRE AVEC L’ARTISTE Aki LUMI ENTRE 19h et 20H30,
suivie d’un moment convivial
Depuis les années 80, l’artiste japonais Aki Lumi construit une œuvre ambivalente, entre photographie, image numérique et dessin. Utilisant tour à tour les procédés traditionnels argentiques, les outils de l’ordinateur, ou la règle, le compas et les ciseaux, il élabore ainsi des images qui intriguent de par leur complexité d’élaboration et d’expression.
Les œuvres présentées sont issues des série « Fracto-graph » et « The Garden » fondées sur un clonage subtil entre l’organisation rigoureuse du jardin occidental et le chaos de la jungle amazonienne. Au cœur de cette confusion des apparences, perspectives et profondeurs semblent s’y dissoudre au profit de jeux de reflets, de lumières et d’ombres que n’aurait pas reniés Claude Monet.
